The Minnesota Golden Gophers will battle the Central Michigan Chippewas in Detroit on Dec. 28 in the 2015 Quick Lane Bowl.

The Golden Gophers (5-7, 2-6 Big Ten) are making an appearance in their fourth straight bowl game and 19th in school history. The Gophers are postseason bound despite a 5-7 record and a 1-6 slide to end the regular season. Last time out, Minnesota fell 31-21 to Wisconsin at home. The Badgers held a 31-14 lead through three quarters and coasted to victory despite a late touchdown from the Gophers. Mitch Leidner struggled in this one throwing three interceptions, two of which were picked off by Tanner McEvoy. The Gophers committed a total of five turnovers on the day and had possession of the ball for just 19:25, which severely limited what they could do offensively and put a lot of pressure on the defense. Rodney Smith (7 car, 35 yards, TD) and Drew Wolitarsky (2 rec, 44 yards, TD) accounted for Minnesota’s only touchdowns. The Gophers are searching for their first postseason win since 2004, when Minnesota knocked off Alabama, 20-16, in the Music City Bowl.

The Chippewas (7-5, 6-2 MAC) are in the postseason for the second consecutive year and ninth in program history. Central Michigan closed out a solid 2015 campaign by winning five of its last six games, including a 35-28 win over Eastern Michigan last time out. The Chippewas climbed out of a deep hole and found themselves tied with the Eagles in a 28-all affair. Cooper Rush hit Corey Willis on a 67-yard touchdown strike at the end of the third quarter in what proved to be the game-winning TD, as neither team would score in the fourth. Romeo Ross had a strong performance for the Chippewas with 97 total yards and four touchdowns. Aside from his pick-six, Cooper Rush also had a big day through the air passing for 391 yards and two touchdowns. Central Michigan is looking to win a bowl game for the first time since its 2012 Little Caesars Bowl victory over Western Kentucky.

The 2015 Quick Lane Bowl will be just the second meeting between Minnesota and Central Michigan. The Gophers took the previous game by a 30-10 count back in 1987.

    Prediction

Minnesota has the 15th-best pass defense in college football. The secondary was supposed to be the strength coming into the season, and it turned into being just that even against the better quarterbacks and good passing games. CMU will get a few big plays from Rush, but Minnesota will find the power and end the disappointing year on a major positive.

    Game Notes

    • The Gophers have played four teams with at least 10 wins and that number could raise to six if Wisconsin and Michigan win their bowl games.
    • CMU finished with the MAC’s best passing defense, allowing just 189 yards per game and held opponents to 22 points per game.
    • KJ Maye’s 65 catches rank fourth all-time and are the second-most ever for a senior in Minnesota history.
