Mississippi State has a lot to look forward to in 2017, and that talent will be on display as the Bulldogs play in the annual Maroon-White Game on Saturday to conclude spring practice. One player that the cowbell-clanging fans will be looking forward to is quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, who was a do-it-all playmaker for the Bulldogs in 2017.

Dan Mullen’s team took advantage of making a bowl game despite a 5-7 record due to a good APR score to defeat Miami (OH) 17-16 and carry some momentum into the offseason. Now, it must find some leaders to step up besides Fitzgerald in order to return to contention for the SEC West title.

Here are some things to watch out for as Mississippi State takes the field on Saturday.

    Maroon-White Game Information

    Date: Saturday, April 8
    Time: 4:00 p.m. ET
    Venue: Davis-Wade Stadium
    Broadcast: SEC Network

    Main Storyline

Has the defense improved under new coordinator Todd Grantham? Grantham arrived from Louisville during the offseason and is hoping to repair a defense that finished 110th in the nation last season, allowing 459.1 yards per game. It won’t be easy, as three of the four starters on the defensive line are gone, along with two linebackers. This is where Grantham will be counting on some JUCO transfers in Johnathan Abram, Chauncey Rivers, and Montez Sweat to come in and immediately fill a role.

    Player To Watch

DL Jeffery Simmons – All of the controversy of Simmons enrolling at Mississippi State is over and done with after his freshman season. Now it is time for him to step up and prove that all the criticism that Mullen took for allowing him to be on the team was worth it. He has the ability to be a game changer.
