The No. 15 Navy Midshipmen will travel to the great state of Texas to take on the Houston Cougars with the winner advancing to the inaugural American Athletic Conference title game.

The Midshipmen (9-1, 7-0 AAC) have won five straight games and are looking to tie a school record with ten wins. Last time out, Navy made easy work of the Tulsa, defeating the Golden Hurricane, 44-27. Navy got off to a hot start, jumping out to a 21-0 lead. The Midshipmen ate up another opposing defense with its dangerous running attack, totaling 469 yards on the ground. Five different players for Navy finished with rushing touchdowns, including Keenan Reynolds. In addition to the touchdown, Reynolds also scampered for 81 yards and became Navy’s all-time leading rusher (4,195), breaking Napoleon McCallum’s record. The Midshipmen QB stands at 82 career touchdowns, and will look to tie or break Montee Ball’s NCAA record of 83.

Although they still have a shot at the AAC title game, the Cougars (10-1, 6-1 AAC) saw their undefeated season come to an end last week in a shocking loss to Connecticut. Houston got out to a slow start and never really recovered as UConn led wire to wire. The Cougars would make it close in the fourth, getting within three points twice, but couldn’t find a rhythm on offense down the stretch and suffered the 20-17 loss. Houston received inconsistent quarterback play as both Kyle Postma and Greg Ward Jr. threw interceptions. A Chance Allen touchdown reception and a Brandon Wilson 94-yard kickoff return were the Cougars only touchdowns. That production will need to change to upset the Midshipmen.

Friday’s meeting will be the second all time between Navy and Houston. The two teams met for the first and only time in 1980, as the Cougars shutout the Midhsipmen, 35-0.

Prediction

At the most important time of the year, the Cougars and Midshipmen are traveling in different directions. Houston is hanging on, dealing with injuries and the emotion of last week’s crushing first loss. Navy, meanwhile, has amassed a head of steam, winning its last five by no less than a dozen points. The Mids will vex the Cougar D with their polished triple-option, while enhancing their reputation as one of the nation’s most underrated defenses. Navy is poised to handle Houston on the road and capture the West Division.

Game Notes

• Navy’s 9-1 record is its best start since 1963 when eventual Heisman Trophy winner Roger Staubach led the Mids to wins in nine of their first 10 games before falling to Texas in the Cotton Bowl which was for the National Championship.
• The Cougars rank 12th nationally in rushing defense, allowing just 114.8 yards per game, while ranking 11th in rushing offense with an average of 242.1 yards per game. Houston is the only team in the nation to rank in the top 15 in both categories.
• Dating back to last year, Navy has won 15 of its last 17 games with the only two losses coming to Notre Dame in Landover, Md. in 2014 and at Notre Dame in 2015.
