Navy has had two weeks to overcome its only loss of the year, falling to Notre Dame, 41-24. The Midshipmen will now have back-to-back home games to regroup, and since they’ve yet to lose an American game, they remain in the thick of the West Division race. Tulane has begun to teeter after peaking with consecutive wins over Maine and UCF earlier in the month. This is an important second half for head coach Curtis Johnson, who’s 14-29 in his fourth season.
The Green Wave is hoping to get back QB Tanner Lee, who missed the Houston game with a concussion. Lee, who’s thrown twice as many touchdowns as picks, gives Tulane a vertical passing game that didn’t exist a week ago against the Cougars. Plus, he also helps bring out the playmaking ability of top receivers Devon Breaux and Teddy Veal.
The Mids didn’t need an extra week to prepare for the Tulane defense, but the additional rest can’t hurt. The Green Wave, minus any legit star power, has given up 45 points per game to five FBS opponents. And Johnson’s kids won’t have any answers for a relentless Navy ground game fueled by dynamic QB Keenan Reynolds and power backs Chris Swain and Quentin Ezell.
Tulane better get moving through the air, because it hasn’t been easy running on the Midshipmen this season. Navy is allowing fewer than four yards a carry, with linemen Will Anthony, Bernard Sarra and Amos Mason consistently generating a push at the point of attack.
With Lee, Tulane has a chance to be competitive for 20 minutes or a half. Without him, the Green Wave is going to get blown out of the water. Reynolds and Navy’s big backs will batter an overmatched Tulane defense, wearing the Green Wave down over the final two quarters.
Final Score: Navy 44, Tulane 20, Line: Navy -23, o/u: 56
