NCAA Men’s Basketball AP Top 25 Rankings – Week 13

The Gonzaga Bulldogs find themselves atop the AP Poll for the first time since the 2012-13 season.

An unblemished record and stretch of dominance throughout conference play has landed the Gonzaga Bulldogs at the top of the latest AP Poll.

This is the second time in school history that the Zags find themselves atop the AP throne. The 2012-13 squad led by the likes of Kelly Olynyk, Elias Harris and Kevin Pangos went into March Madness with the top spot in the polls and No. 1 overall seed before an eventual stumble to the Wichita State Shockers in the Round of 32.

This Gonzaga team, though, is quite different from that of the ’12-13 ensemble, boasting a more balanced repertoire on both the offensive and defensive end. Four players average double figures in points per game. Three more players are on the cusp of achieving that goal, averaging at least 8.4 PPG. The Bulldogs are No. 1 in the KenPom rankings with the No. 6 adjusted offensive efficiency and No. 3 defensive efficiency in the country, and have five wins over top-40 KenPom teams. They sit in the top-15 in RPI and top-10 in BPI.

Reverting back to the age-old argument that has been incessantly berated into the heads of the GU faithful: No, Gonzaga’s conference schedule can’t compete with that of any Power Five program. The Zags aren’t tested on a weekly basis like that of, say, the ACC or Big East, and their (conference) strength of schedule is nothing to write home about. But make no mistake – these Zags are legit.

It was no guarantee that Mark Few’s squad would be rewarded with the AP’s top slot, though. The Carlton Bragg-less Kansas Jayhawks are fresh off a remarkable win over Kentucky in Rupp Arena, and the Villanova Wildcats took down then-No. 12 Virginia on a buzzer-beating tip-in by rookie guard Donte DiVincenzo. However, losses to then-No. 18 West Virginia and Marquette, respectively, kept the Jayhawks and ‘Cats off the top line.
