NCAA Tournament Projections As of Dec. 7

Any big changes at the top of the bracket?

The college basketball season is underway, and we’ve had a very exciting start to the season despite the many coronavirus-related cancellations. While the early schedule has brought us Top 25 matchups, the one we were looking forward to the most never happened. Of course, I am speaking of the cancellation of the much-anticipated Gonzaga-Baylor game. What would have been the clash of No. 1 vs. No. 2 will have to wait as both teams hope to get the game eventually rescheduled. With no way — at least for now — to decide it on the court, Gonzaga and Baylor remain No. 1 and 2, respectively, in my latest bracket.

Early brackets are tough enough to put together during a normal year. But this year, with some teams already playing as many as six games while others have not yet started their seasons, even our wonderful metrics can’t accurately sort out a true seed list. That’s why I’m relying more on the “eye test” during these early rankings. Due to the unevenness of the schedule, it’s really the only way to come up with a seed list that makes sense.

As I mentioned a few weeks ago, there will be no regional or pod sites this year. All games in the NCAA Tournament will be played in the Indianapolis area, with the exact sites yet to be determined. However, I will continue to label my regions by geography as I checked with the NCAA this week and they have made no decision on how each region will be named. That being said, I have seen suggestions of regional numbers (1-4) or perhaps naming them after legends of the game. Until any decision is made, I will continue to use the geographic site names that we have all become accustomed to.

Something new I’m very excited about this season is the Bracketology by TKBrackets podcast. On each episode we will take a look at the most recent bracket and highlight teams that have made moves. We will also have guests on like the top bracketologists in the country, NCAA staff members who help put the official bracket together, former selection committee members and the biggest names in college basketball.
