NCAA Tournament Projections As of Feb. 24

Kansas solidifies their spot as the top-seeded team. Here's how the rest of the bracket shakes out.

It’s been awhile since we have even had to look at the top line of the bracket. Those top four teams – Baylor, Kansas, Gonzaga and San Diego State – had been rolling. That was until Saturday when three of those teams lost.

Now, for the big question among bracketologists: Who drops, and who doesn’t? If there is one thing I have learned over the years, it is to not overreact to an occasional loss to a really good team. Of course, these teams fit that bill. So let’s look at how I arrived at the current ranking.

To me, Kansas was a fairly easy pick over Baylor for the No. 1 overall seed. Whatever metric you want to use – NET, Q1, top 20, top 50, SOS – the Jayhawks have the advantage. On the other hand, if you wanted to move Gonzaga or San Diego State (or both) off the one line, a Maryland victory may have gotten that done. But the Terps went down to Ohio State and that left them seventh on the seed line.

Duke did not have the resume to move to the top either, so that left Dayton as the only remaining option. After some hard research, I found Dayton was much closer to taking over both than I had imagined. The only factor I found to keep both the Zags and SDSU on the top line was their high quality of Q1 wins. The Flyers did not have any, and have only one possibility at #39 Rhode Island on March 4.

It is currently very close, and another misstep by any of the top teams could move someone up from the two line – mostly likely Dayton.

LAST FOUR IN: Richmond, Providence, NC State, Utah State
FIRST FOUR OUT: Memphis, Cincinnati, UCLA, Mississippi State
NEXT FOUR OUT:  Georgetown, UNC-Greensboro, South Carolina, Alabama

Now it’s time for Bracket Facts:

Tip of the cap to this team: Creighton. For the second week in a row, we are leaving the Jays right here. Why? They just continue to win, now having won nine of 10. They absolutely crushed #21 Butler 81-59 on Sunday in a game that wasn’t as close as the final score. Kamar Baldwin had to sit out the second half because of an injury, but Creighton clicked on all cylinders. They now have a week off until they meet St. John’s next Sunday.

Best team: Kansas. We knew that Baylor’s 22-day stretch in which they face the top teams in the Big 12 could take its toll. Kansas got revenge Saturday and looked like the best team in the country.

In the bracket but fading fast: USC. The Trojans continue to slide after losing to Utah on Sunday. They are in my last four byes right now, but soon could be in trouble as the Arizona swing looms.

On the uptick: Indiana. To show how quickly things change: The Hoosiers were in the “fading fast” category last week. But two wins – over Minnesota and highly-regarded Penn State on Sunday – have the Hoosiers in a good place. But a big two-game road trip is up next which very well could decide their NCAA tournament fate.
