Nevada Coach Steve Alford Signs 10-Year Contract: Salary, Buyout, Incentives

    Former UCLA Coach Steve Alford, who was fired by the Bruins on New Year’s Eve, was hired by Nevada, where he’ll replace Eric Musselman, who left for Arkansas.

    Stadium obtained Alford’s contract with Nevada via public records request.

    He signed a 10-year contract on April 11, 2019 with the university worth $11.6 million that runs through April 30, 2029.

    Alford’s base salary will be $300,000 annually. He’ll also earn a Media and Public Appearances fee every year, which is outlined below.

    • Year 1: $100,000
    • Year 2: $100,000
    • Year 3: $425,000
    • Year 4: $450,000
    • Year 5: $475,000
    • Year 6: $500,000
    • Year 7: $525,000
    • Year 8: $550,000
    • Year 9: $575,000
    • Year 10: $600,000

     

    Alford will earn an annual Name, Image and Likeness Fee that is outlined below.

    • Year 1: $100,000
    • Year 2: $100,000
    • Year 3: $425,000
    • Year 4: $450,000
    • Year 5: $475,000
    • Year 6: $500,000
    • Year 7: $525,000
    • Year 8: $550,000
    • Year 9: $575,000
    • Year 10: $600,000

     

    Alford’s total annual salary is listed below.

    • Year 1: $500,000
    • Year 2: $500,000
    • Year 3: $1.15 million
    • Year 4: $1.2 million
    • Year 5: $1.25 million
    • Year 6: $1.3 million
    • Year 7: $1.35 million
    • Year 8: $1.4 million
    • Year 9: $1.45 million
    • Year 10: $1.5 million

     

    Alford will have the ability to receive two retention bonuses if he remains at Nevada, which are outlined below.

    • $250,000 – If Alford is still employed at Nevada on April 1, 2022.
    • $250,000 – If Alford is still employed at Nevada on April 1, 2025.

     

    Alford will have the opportunity to earn performance-based incentives that are outlined below.

    • $10,000 – If Nevada wins at least a share of the Mountain West regular season title.
    • $10,000 – If Nevada wins the Mountain West Tournament.
    • $10,000 – If Alford wins conference coach of the year.
    • The following NCAA Tournament incentives are cumulative.
      • $10,000 – If Nevada plays in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.
      • $10,000 – If Nevada plays in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
      • $25,000 – If Nevada plays in the Sweet 16.
      • $50,000 – If Nevada plays in the Elite Eight.
      • $150,000 – If Nevada plays in the Final Four.
      • $250,000 – If Nevada wins the national championship.
    • The following NIT incentives are not cumulative.
      • $10,000 – If Nevada plays in the Final Four of the NIT.
      • $25,000 – If Nevada plays in the NIT Championship.
      • $50,000 – If Nevada wins the NIT.

     

    He’ll also receive a $25,000 relocation/moving allowance within 30 days of being hired.

    If Alford is fired by Nevada, he’ll receive the remaining base salary, media and public appearances fee, name, image and likeness fee, and retention bonuses for the remaining period of the contract. If he’s fired, he must make “reasonable and diligent efforts to obtain basketball-related employment” in order to mitigate the amount of money Nevada would owe him.

    The amount Nevada would owe Alford would be offset by the amount he would earn at his next job.

    If Nevada receives NCAA sanctions within three years of firing Alford, he could be required to reimburse the university of the liquidated damages paid to him.

    Alford’s buyout is outlined below in the case that he chooses to leave Nevada.

    • Year 1: $8 million
    • Year 2: $6 million
    • Year 3: $4 million
    • Year 4: $3 million
    • Year 5: $2 million
    • Year 6: $1.5 million
    • Year 7: $1.5 million
    • Year 8: $1.5 million
    • Year 9: $1.5 million
    • Year 10: $1.5 million

     

    The first contract year ends on June 30, 2020 and each subsequent contract year begins on July 1, ending on June 30 of the subsequent year.
