Former Buffalo Coach Nate Oats made the jump to the SEC after the Bulls were eliminated in the 2019 NCAA Tournament as he’ll replace Avery Johnson at Alabama.
Oats signed a memorandum of understanding with Alabama on March 27 for a five-year contract that will end on March 14, 2024. Stadium obtained the memo of understanding via public records request that outlines a base salary of $275,000/year, a talent fee of $2,175,000/year and an expense account of $12,000/year.
That adds up to $2,462,000 annually.
Alabama also paid a $750,000 buyout to Buffalo as part of Oats’ previous contract with the Bulls.
At Alabama, Oats will have the ability to earn contract incentives that are outlined below:
- $50,000 – For winning the regular season SEC championship
- $50,000 – For winning the SEC Tournament
- $50,000 – For Alabama participating in the NCAA Tournament in the first two years of Oats’ contract
- $25,000 – For Alabama participating in the NCAA Tournament every year after
- $50,000 – For every win in the Final Four or national championship
- $25,000 – For being named SEC Coach of the Year
- $25,000 – For annually attaining an 85 percent graduation rate and the team’s APR score being above the NCAA-defined cut score
Here are the buyout amounts that Oats would owe Alabama if he terminated his contract early.
- Through March 14, 2020: $8,000,000
- From March 15, 2020 through March 14, 2021: $6,000,000
- From March 15, 2021 through March 14, 2022: $4,000,000
- From March 15, 2022 through March 14, 2023: $2,000,000
- From March 15, 2023 through March 14, 2024: $1,000,000
Here are the buyout amounts that Alabama would owe Oats if the school terminated his contract early:
- Through March 14, 2020: $9,187,500
- From March 15, 2020 through March 14, 2021: $7,350,000
- From March 15, 2021 through March 14, 2022: $5,512,500
- From March 15, 2022 through March 14, 2023: $3,675,000
- From March 15, 2023 through March 14, 2024: $1,837,500
