AP Top 25 College Football Rankings – Week 9

AP Top 25 college football rankings heading into Week 9 of the 2016 season. Ohio State’s shocking loss to Penn State and Houston’s blowout defeat shake up the rankings.

Just about everyone penciled in Ohio State and Michigan meeting Nov. 26 in Columbus as undefeated teams battling it out in one of college football’s biggest rivalry games for a spot in the Big Ten title game.

Penn State made sure that wouldn’t happen.

The Buckeyes had a field goal blocked late in the fourth quarter, and the Nittany Lions, who entered the poll for the first time in five seasons at No. 24, returned it for the deciding touchdown in a 24-21 victory in Happy Valley. Ohio State’s loss shook up the new AP Top 25, but there’s still plenty of football left to be played – and that potential win over Michigan – for the Buckeyes to get back into the College Football Playoff discussion.

Alabama held firm at No. 1 after beating then-No. 6 Texas A&M at home, but Houston took a huge tumble from No. 11 out of the poll completely after being routed, 38-16, by SMU. Will the Cougars’ fall from college football’s darlings to just another unranked team hurt Tom Herman’s chances of landing a top-tier job if he decides to leave Houston?

Now that Auburn’s offense is back, the Tigers suddenly look like it can give Alabama a tough game in the Iron Bowl to close out the regular season. Their 56-3 thrashing of then-No. 17 Arkansas marked one of the more stunning results of the weekend.

Here’s a look at the rest of the AP Top 25 that was released Sunday afternoon.
