Baker Mayfield Returning To Oklahoma In 2017

Oklahoma’s Baker Mayfield will return to Oklahoma next season. The Sooners quarterback made the announcement after a win over Oklahoma State on Saturday.

Oklahoma quarterback Baker Mayfield is coming back to Norman in 2017.

The Oklahoma quarterback announced in a postgame press conference that he will return to the Sooners next season.

“I’ll be here another year for a three-peat. The ultimate goal is to play for a national championship,” Mayfield said.

That’s big news for Bob Stoops and Co., who will likely fall short of a College Football Playoff berth despite claiming their ninth straight win of the season on Saturday. Mayfield passed for 288 yards and three touchdowns, as the No. 7 Sooners defeated No. 11 Oklahoma State, 38-20, in a game that decided the Big 12 champion and likely clinched a spot for the Sooners in the Sugar Bowl.

It was the second straight time the teams met in the regular-season finale to decide the Big 12 champion. Oklahoma beat the Cowboys 58-23 last season.

“Baker again was just outstanding, scrambling and making plays,” Stoops said after the win.

Mayfield passed for 3,381 yards with 35 touchdowns and eight interceptions this fall, as he was the catalyst for a Sooners revival after a 1-2 start. The signal-caller has a chance to get invited to the Heisman Trophy ceremony next Saturday after finishing fourth in the Heisman balloting last year. However, he did not get an invitation to New York for the ceremony.┬áThis year’s finalists will be announced on Monday evening.
