Best College Football Uniforms – Week 6

The best college football uniforms for Week 6 of the season, as Campus Insiders turns into #FashionInsiders. This week’s top threads go from coast to coast.

I don’t know about all of you, but I cannot believe that we’re already approaching Week 6 of the college football season. As they say, time flies when you are having fun. And I’ve got to admit, coming to work everyday is fun thanks to the my co-workers. That is especially true when one of them is dealing with a fractured heel and has to wheel himself around the office in his desk chair all day. I may or may not have had to pull him (in his chair) across the street to a nearby parking lot two days ago during a fire drill.

As you’ll notice, my Week 6 rankings have a military/heroic theme to them. It’s a soft spot of mine given that one of my closest friends is an Iraq War veteran, and we should always recognize what needs recognizing and be thankful for their service.

Onward my friends.

Best Uniforms For Week 6

Boston College

When people talk about real life heroes, there is one name that should always be mentioned: Welles Crowther. For those unfamiliar, Crowther is maybe better known as “The Man in the Red Bandanna.” The former Boston College lacrosse player, known for always wearing a red bandanna while on the field, was credited with saving at least a dozen people at the World Trade Center on 9/11 before ultimately losing his own life. People who witnessed him saving others on that day all described him as having been wearing a red bandanna. When the Boston College football team clashes with No. 3 Clemson on Friday night, different aspects of their uniform will include “red bandanna” features.

The Eagles’ helmet normally has a solid red stripe splitting it down the middle. This week, however, that red stripe will be the pattern of a red bandanna. The rest of the helmet will remain the same as usual. And, like most of the helmet, the jerseys being worn by Boston College will be their regular home tops, and the pants will be their normal selves as well.

The cleats and gloves to be worn by the Eagles will be of the same red bandanna pattern as the helmet stripe.

While the uniform as a whole is nothing special, the tributes to Welles Crowther are awesome and I am very happy that Boston College is doing this. Heroic acts deserve to be honored, and while this is a great tribute, nothing will ever live up to the standards that he set by risking his life to save many others.

Eastern Washington

ewu uniforms

Hey now, that’s two weeks in a row that Eastern Washington has made the list! This is a historic day, as the Eagles are the first team to crack my exclusive rankings more than once. We’re breaking down barriers, people. This week, Eastern Washington will also be wearing uniforms to honor the military and its veterans.

Starting up top, the helmets to be worn by EWU will be red with their usual logo on both sides of the helmet and a black facemask. However, the eagle logo is going to be a black and grey camouflage pattern instead of one solid color. The back of the helmet will have an American flag sticker in addition to a couple of other stickers.

As for the actual threads, the jersey will be grey with red letters and numbers outlined by a white stroke. The front of the jersey spells out “EASTERN” across the chest just above the player number, while the Eagles’ logo rests on the left chest and the Big Sky Conference logo on the right. The best part of the jersey is on the shoulder where a navy blue and white camouflage pattern stretches from the neck to the sleeves. A nice touch.

The Eagles will be wearing all-red pants with their logo on the front of the left hip, and the adidas logo on the other. A very nice uniform with military tributes that I’d like to see more teams replicate.

1) Pittsburgh Panthers

pitt panthers uniforms

If you’re ever in the market for a solid, legit throwback uniform, I’d recommend taking a look at what Pittsburgh will be repping this weekend for the homecoming game against Georgia Tech. It will undoubtedly end up being one of the season’s best throwback uniform kits. For you trivia nuts like me, the last time Pitt wore throwbacks was all the way back in 2005 (I’m getting old, and I’m only 24).

I’ve got to say that I love these uniforms. The helmet, in all its gold glory with “PITT” scripted in blue cursive on either side, is an awesome, classic look. I could do away with the grey facemasks (maybe go white or gold instead), but they are by no means bad.

Moving down to the main portion, that being the jersey, we’ve got an all-blue top with white letters and numbers outlined in the same gold color as the helmets. “PITT” spelled out in the same cursive font as on the helmets, lays at the base of the front collar and is a crucial element to the jersey. Even though it’s a small feature, without it the jersey would look bland and incomplete. And before you jump all over me on this, I am aware that lots of teams have a logo or team name on their collar like Pitt does here. Pitt’s is just a perfect example of how to use it.

The pants to be worn by the Panthers are gold with a blue and white triple-stripe pattern going down the sides.

As I said in last week’s post with regards to Texas A&M’s throwback uniforms, simple is usually a good thing with throwbacks. I’ve seen too many teams, both collegiate and pro, try and do way too much with their throwback looks and ultimately damage their image. Pitt has done the opposite, and they nailed it.

As a side note, Miami (FL) will be breaking out their new uniforms this weekend. You can read about those here.
