Report: Chris Weinke Meeting With Tennessee About Coaching Position

Former Heisman Trophy winner and Florida state quarterback Chris Weinke is meeting with Tennessee about a position on Butch Jones’ coaching staff.

Butch Jones is looking to take Tennessee to the next level, so bringing in a coach that won the ultimate prize, the national title, as a player might be a smart move.

Per John Price of 247Sports, former FSU quarterback Chris Weinke is in Knoxville meeting with Jones and the Tennessee staff about a position with the Volunteers. Weinke spent the past two seasons as the quarterback coach under Jeff Fisher for the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams.

Weinke brings in a pedigree of winning in college, as he led the Seminoles to the 1999 BCS National Championship and won the Heisman Trophy in 2000 after throwing for 4,1674 yards and 33 touchdowns.

The position that the two parties are meeting about is unknown, but the Volunteers offensive coordinator for the last two seasons, Mike DeBord, left Knoxville for the same position at Indiana earlier this week.

From 2010-14, Weinke served as the Director of Football at the IMG Academy, which produces a plethora of prospects each year that schools heavily recruit. His inroads with the powerhouse academy would also be a boon for Jones – himself one of the nation’s better head coaches with regards to recruiting.

With the graduation of Joshua Dobbs, the Volunteers will have a new quarterback under center for the first time in three-plus years. Quinten Dormady and Jarrett Guarantano are expected to compete for the starting position next season.
