College Basketball Coaching Salary and Buyout Database for 2019-20 Season

Via public records requests, Stadium has acquired copies of contracts for more than 100 college basketball coaches from across the country for the 2019-20 season, and compiled a list of the total compensation and buyouts for those coaches.

Some coaches’ contracts are unavailable for private institutions or inaccessible due to state records laws, so this isn’t a complete list of every coach. We have also provided the contract information for a few notable coaches like Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Virginia’s Tony Bennett, whose contracts are either off limits from public records requests or for whom Stadium is still awaiting a response. Their contract details come from media reports and are noted below.

We’re in the process of adding the contract details for more coaches, so if you don’t see your coach on this list, check back again soon.

Coaches are listed in descending order of their total compensation for the 2019-20 season.

Total compensation includes a coach’s base salary and supplemental compensation that’s classified as things like “media and endorsement payment,” “supplemental pay” and “rights fees.” Also included are signing bonuses, retention bonuses that have been earned or can be earned during the 2019-20 contract year, specified retirement plan contributions or contributions towards life insurance, and any accrued but unpaid deferred compensation. The types of compensation are noted when applicable.

In addition to total compensation, we included an annual compensation category, which isn’t included in total compensation and includes things like income from hosting summer basketball camps.

Total compensation doesn’t include potential performance-based incentives, which are listed in a separate categories called “Max bonus,” which shows the maximum amount a coach can receive for his team’s on-court and academic achievements.

Benefits, such as health benefits, private flights, vehicle stipends, phone stipends and country club memberships aren’t included in the calculations below. For coaches hired last offseason, buyout payments, temporary housing and moving expenses were also not included in total or additional compensation.

Some coaches may receive additional compensation from apparel companies in contracts that are negotiated separately and not reflected in the salary numbers listed below.
