College Football News Roundup – January 18

A college football roundup that includes three Oregon players hospitalized after strenuous workouts and Arkansas hiring a defensive coordinator.

A troubling sign that you have no life: you go on Wikipedia to learn the history of the Caesar salad while enjoying one for dinner. I’m not joking. That was my Monday night. Did you know it was created by a guy named Caeser Cardini while he owned a restaurant in Tijuana? Insane, right? I just figured that, while getting stabbed, Julius Caeser yelled out, “Et tu, Brute … Please name a famous salad after me.”

In college football news, former Tennessee head football coach Phillip Fulmer is a top candidate for the Volunteers athletic director job, California and new head coach Justin Wilcox found a great offensive coordinator in Beau Baldwin, and USC’s Adoree’ Jackson has declared for the 2017 NFL Draft. Here are some other newsworthy notes in the latest college football news roundup.

Not The Best Start – After going through “grueling strength and conditioning workouts,” three Oregon players – offensive lineman Doug Brenner, tight end Cam McCormick, and offensive lineman Sam Poutasi – are hospitalized in a Springfield, Oregon hospital.

“The safety and welfare of all of our student-athletes is paramount in all that we do,” Oregon said in a news release.

This is not the start that Willie Taggart envisioned when moving to Eugene.

Fixing The Defense – Arkansas and Bret Bielema have a new defensive coordinator in Paul Rhoads, who was promoted from defensive backs coach on Monday. Rhoads replaces Robb Smith, who took the coordinator position at Minnesota.

The Razorbacks finished 75th in the nation in total defense, allowing 426.6 yards per game while giving up 31.1 points per game this last season.

Palmetto State Is Lit – Soon after Clemson won the national title last Monday night against Alabama, South Carolina head coach Will Muschamp sent a text to his team that said, “game on.”

The Gamecocks have been overshadowed by the Tigers in the state the last few seasons as Dabo Swinney has built Clemson into a powerhouse.
