College Football News Roundup – October 11

A college football news roundup that includes a Tennessee player being dismissed from team and Oregon’s athletic director understanding frustration of Ducks fans.

It is the middle of October, which means it is almost time to put away the shorts and tees for the winter and get out the coats and mittens. We still have a lot of football to play, though, so hang in there even as that weather starts to nip at your nose.

In college football news, Virginia Tech head coach Justin Fuente received some advice from the man he replaced in Blacksburg, Bob Stoops and Bill Snyder can’t explain the away team’s success in the Oklahoma-Kansas State series, and Florida athletic director Jeremy Foley released a statement on the rescheduling of the Florida-LSU game. Here are some other newsworthy notes in the latest college football news roundup.

Tennessee Player Dismissed – The Volunteers were already going to be without the services of defensive tackle Danny O’Brien on Saturday against Alabama after he suffered an injury in the loss to Texas A&M, but now they will be without him forever as O’Brien was kicked off the team on Monday for a violation of team rules.

“Defensive lineman Danny O’Brien has been dismissed from the Tennessee football team for violation of team rules,” Tennessee said in a statement. “This news is unrelated to the injury he suffered against Texas A&M. However, should he require any additional care, it will be provided by the University of Tennessee.”

Kelly Admits Mistake – After being involved in an on-field altercation at his brother’s high school game this past Friday, Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly has apologized for his actions.

“If I could’ve done it differently, I definitely would have. I obviously wouldn’t have run out on the field,” Kelly said Monday, speaking for the first time since the incident. “I regret doing it. But at the same time, I’m sure any of us, if we saw a family member out there in need of help, we would’ve come to the rescue too.”

Maybe Time For Another Players-Only Meeting? – The Oregon Ducks are barely wading upstream at this point, as Washington demolished them, 70-21, this past Saturday in the second-worst defeat in program history. Some fans are now calling for head coach Mark Helfrich’s job, and his athletic director Rob Mullens understands how they feel.

“I understand the frustration. I absolutely appreciate the passion,” Mullens told. “We’re six games into the season and not where anyone wants to be. But there’s still an opportunity to turn this a little bit and see some positive results. As I talk to Mark, they go right back to work and get right back in it.”
