Projecting Where 5-Star CB Darnay Holmes Will Commit

Five-star cornerback Darnay Holmes will commit to the school of his choice on January 7 at the Army All-American Bowl. The Campus Insiders staff gave its predictions on where the nation’s No. 1 cornerback and No. 9 overall player will end up.

From what I’ve heard, the only two teams that really have a shot at Darnay Holmes are Ohio State and UCLA. The Bruins defense has performed quite well, and that’s an attractive feature for Holmes when the thought of staying close to home crosses his mind. However, I believe there is a movement going on in Columbus, and Holmes wants to be a part of it. With Baron Browning having joined the Buckeyes, and Jeffrey Okudah likely joining as well, I believe Holmes will choose that path as well. They’ve surely been talking about it at the U.S. Army All-American Bowl practices.

Ohio State and Nebraska pose attractive options for Holmes, but the prospect of playing near home and for one of the most prestigious programs in college football history will be too tough to pass up. Holmes will pick USC in a bit of an upset.

UCLA has pulled in top-10 classes the past two years, and now they sit at … No. 49. That just doesn’t fit with the recent trend of Jim Mora’s program. Something’s gotta give here. UCLA’s pass defense was one of the best in the Pac-12, and Holmes would fit in nicely to a roster looking to fill out its secondary. Fellow California recruits like Jaelin Phillips are so dead-set on going to UCLA that I think they’ll put enough lean on Holmes to keep him in-state.

Holmes, who is one of the better cornerbacks in the country, has narrowed his list of schools to four. The Southern California native has Nebraska, Ohio State, UCLA and USC on his list. Holmes is a big fan of Cornhuskers cornerbacks coach Donte Williams, who previously recruited him at Arizona. He has unofficially visited Nebraska three times, and current Nebraska commits Tristan Gebbia and Keyshawn Johnson Jr. also go to Calabasas High School. Mike Riley and his staff will hit a home run, as the Big Ten’s Huskers ultimately get a pledge from the star corner.
