Donovan Jeter Decommits From Notre Dame Fighting Irish

Four-star defensive end Donovan Jeter has decommitted from the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.

Well, that didn’t last very long.

Less than a month after he pledged to Brian Kelly’s Fighting Irish, 4-star recruit Donovan Jeter decommitted from Notre Dame on Tuesday.

The decision from the nation’s No. 30 defensive end and No. 300 overall player knocks the Irish down from No. 4 to No. 7 in the 2017 recruiting class rankings, as they now have 17 total commits in the cycle.

Jeter released a brief statement regarding the decision to reopen his recruitment, while still keeping the Irish atop his list.

“After praying and thinking about it, I’ve decided to decommit from Notre Dame, but they are still my top school. I am opening up my recruitment.”

Jeter originally pledged to Notre Dame on Sept. 19, a couple of days after taking an official visit to South Bend to witness the Irish’s 36-28 loss to Michigan State. He was supposed to announce his commitment on Halloween but decided he couldn’t wait after that official visit.

The Beaver Falls, Pennsylvania native holds 28 total scholarship offers, including Maryland, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Ohio State, Penn State, Pitt, West Virginia and others.

When he released his top 10 schools in late March, Jeter listed the following programs, in alphabetical order: Michigan, Notre Dame, Penn State, Pitt, Ohio State, Ole Miss, South Carolina, Stanford, Tennessee and UCLA.

Even though the Irish remain his top choice, there’s a chance Brian Kelly may not be the head coach next season. Notre Dame is 2-5, and there is a legitimate buzz surrounding his seat and whether or not it’s warming up.

Programs usually don’t make coaching decisions based on recruits, but recruits certainly make decisions based on coaches.
