Report: Ohio State OC Ed Warinner Not Expected To Join Minnesota

Ohio State offensive coordinator Ed Warinner reportedly will not join P.J. Fleck at Minnesota, contrary to rumors that were swirling this week.

UPDATE: Later Tuesday, a report from Sports Illustrated’s Peter Thamel surfaced saying Ed Warinner left Ohio State to become Minnesota’s offensive line coach.

ORIGINAL POST:

P.J. Fleck has been able to convince plenty of recruits to flip their commitments and join him at Minnesota since taking the Golden Gophers’ job late last week.

It appears he wasn’t able to do the same after reportedly targeting Ed Warinner.

According to FootballScoop, the Ohio State offensive coordinator accepting the same position at Minnesota is “not expected to come together” following rumblings that Fleck targeted Warinner to join his new staff.

FootballScoop also had the initial report Monday.

That could mean Warinner has other plans outside of Columbus, or he could decide to remain at Ohio State despite an announcement appearing imminent naming former Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson as the Buckeyes’ new offensive coordinator.

Cleveland.com’s Ari Wasserman reported last week that Warinner will remain on Urban Meyer’s staff, but that he will be stripped of play-calling duties. What role Warinner would assume should he stay in Columbus remains unclear, making it surprising that he wouldn’t jump at the chance to run the offense at Minnesota under Fleck.

Warinner called plays for Ohio State this past season, but the Buckeyes were blanked, 31-0, by eventual national champion Clemson in the College Football Playoff. Meyer had delegated that responsibility to Warinner over Tim Beck, who had a role in the offense but didn’t make the final decisions in terms of in-game plays.

Beck left the Buckeyes last week to accept the offensive coordinator job at Texas under new coach Tom Herman, a former Ohio State offensive coordinator himself under Meyer.
