Florida Gators Spring Practice: Jim McElwain Press Conference Quotes

Jim McElwain previewed the upcoming start (Feb. 28) of Florida Gators spring practice on Thursday. Here are some notable quotes from his press conference.

The Florida Gators, coming off two seasons where they won the SEC East but were never seriously considered a national title contender, will begin spring practice on Tuesday, February 28.

A lot of questions will have to be answered – who will step up at quarterback, what players will fill voids left on the highly-touted defense and at the left tackle position, among others – as the Gators try to take the next step.

Head coach Jim McElwain discussed several hot topics facing his team at his press conference on Thursday.

On what he is looking for in quarterbacks

“I think the biggest piece we’re looking for first and foremost is for somebody to step up and say, ‘I’m going to take this and I’m going to lead this team and help the parts around me play better.’ It can’t be forced. It has to be natural.”

On momentum from previous two seasons

“I think the excitement and momentum we’ve built continues to roll and go forward. The announcement of the architecture and the things going on with the new facilities is a game changer…As we go around locally, nationally, regionally, a lot of people (are) understanding what we’ve overcome and been able to build in the two years we’ve been here.”

On redshirt freshman QB Feleipe Franks

“I think the biggest thing there is understanding that it just doesn’t happen automatically. There’s a learning curve and there’s a lot that can be learned from when things don’t go well and how do you deal with that, but more than that, how do I learn from that to make myself better. And I’ve seen that from him.”

On wide receiver depth

“I see it as a real group of strength for us. I think the big thing now comes the accountability piece and competition piece among each other, understanding where they need to be and why they need to be there in all the different parts of the passing game. I’m excited about that group and we’ve got great depth.”

McElwain also gave an injury update for spring practice.
