Four-Star Defensive Tackle Ishmael Sopsher Headed to the SEC

The top uncommitted defensive tackle in the 2019 recruiting class made his college decision on National Signing Day, signing his national letter of intent to Alabama.

Four-star defensive tackle Ishmael Sopsher, a 6-4, 334-pound native of Amite, Louisiana was down to three SEC West schools – Alabama, LSU and Texas A&M – and Oregon. The Tigers were the favorite to land the in-state defensive tackle, according to his 247Sports Crystal Ball, which was 71 percent in favor of LSU on Monday. His most recent official visit was to Baton Rouge on Feb. 1.

But he’ll leave his home state for college.

Sopsher joins five-star recruits Antonio Alfano, Trey Sanders and Evan Neal as part of the Crimson Tide’s 2019 recruiting class that was ranked No. 1 nationally prior to his commitment, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He also took official visits to Texas A&M (Nov. 30), Oregon (Dec. 15) and Alabama (Jan. 25).

Sopsher is the No. 5 defensive tackle and No. 47 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting class, according to the 247Sports Composite rankings.

He has been timed running a 5.50-second 40-yard dash.

247Sports Director of Scouting Barton Simmons compares Sopsher to John Jenkins of the New York Giants, and Simmons projects the defensive tackle to be a future second- or third-round NFL Draft pick.

“Densely built defender with a powerful lower half and a thick upper half,” Simmons wrote of Sopsher.
