Marshall vs. Charlotte Game Preview

When: Saturday, Oct. 22 – 5:30 p.m. ET
Where: Joan C. Edwards Stadium, Huntington, WV
TV Broadcast: BeIN SPORTS

The Thundering Herd (2-4, 1-1 Conference USA) used a late Keion Davis touchdown (one of two on the evening) to score a 27-21 win over Florida Atlantic last week. Doc Holliday’s squad trailed 21-19 late in the fourth quarter before an elongated game-winning drive. A subsequent Owls drive to Marshall’s 10-yard line fell short when the Thundering Herd took over on downs, and they ran out the clock.

Meanwhile, the 49ers (2-5, 1-2) are coming off of a tough one-point loss to FIU last Saturday night, as Golden Panthers quarterback Alex McGough accounted for three touchdowns, including a scoring pass with 1:05 to play.

In last year’s meeting in Charlotte, Chase Litton threw for a career-high 486 yards with two touchdowns in a 34-10 win, which was the Thundering Herd’s seventh straight victory. Litton was 33-of-48 passing, while Remi Watson and Keion Davis added touchdown runs. Marshall had 630 yards of total offense and led 31-3 at the half. Meanwhile, Kalif Phillips ran for 99 yards and a score for the 49ers.

What To Know About Marshall-

In the win over the Owls, Litton finished 27 of 39 for 330 yards through the air, including a 65-yard touchdown in the second quarter. Josh Knight had 128 yards on nine catches, as Holliday’s squad ended its four-game losing streak. With Litton, Knight and a serviceable run game, the Herd can move the football with relative ease, but Litton has to be better at protecting the football. Defensively, the Herd is allowing 480.3 yards per game, with over 200 each coming on the ground and through the air. So that is a major concern for a team striving to go bowling.

What to Know About Charlotte

Last week’s loss was a tough pill to swallow for the 49ers, as they blew a 26-13 lead with 7:12 left and also had a PAT blocked. In his second start at quarterback, Hasaan Klugh was 21-of-31 passing for 171 yards and a touchdown, and he added 95 yards and a score on the ground. The former North Carolina A&T Aggie has played well since taking over for Miami transfer Kevin Olsen, so that’s a nice development for Charlotte. Meanwhile, Phillips had his fourth straight game with 100 or more yards from scrimmage, and the 49ers rank No. 3 in C-USA in rushing offense after matching a season-high with 232 yards on the ground vs. FIU.

Offense: Marshall. The Herd is averaging 33.8 points per game compared to Charlotte’s 24.4 points per contest.

Defense: Even. Both units are allowing opponents to rack up over 450 yards per game.

Special Teams: Marshall. Charlotte kicker Stephen Muscarello has had four unsuccessful extra point attempts this season.

Coaching: Marshall. Holliday has won double-digit games three years in a row heading into the season.

Intangibles: Marshall. The Thundering Herd know they need to take care of business against an overmatched Charlotte squad.

Matchup To Watch

Litton vs. Charlotte secondary

The 49ers are allowing 299.4 yards per game through the air, so this has a chance to get ugly. Litton has gone over 240 yards in each game and has 14 touchdowns on the season, and this 49ers secondary will be overmatched against a receiving corps that has seen 13 players catch at least one pass. Remember, Litton was 33-of-48 passing in last year’s easy win over the 49ers.

Betting Odds

Spread: Marshall -12.5
Over/Under: 58.5

Marshall vs. Charlotte Prediction

The Herd really need this game if they want to earn a postseason bid, as they are already sitting with four losses. Marshall is looking for its first back-to-back victories of the season, and Holliday’s squad will get it over an inferior Charlotte squad. Too much offensive firepower for the Herd.

Marshall vs. Charlotte Score Prediction: Marshall 41, Charlotte 27
