Michigan Hosting Blue-Chip Recruits For Spring Game

Michigan will host a group of blue-chip recruits this weekend, and the visit to Ann Arbor will be centered around the Wolverines’ spring football game.

Jim Harbaugh has been wildly successful on the recruiting trail since taking over the reins of his alma mater.

Back-to-back cycles with top-10 recruiting classes have Michigan set up for success over the next few years, but the Wolverines need to continue down the path they’re on in order to sustain that success. And their 2018 recruiting haul could be seriously impacted by this upcoming weekend.

Michigan’s annual spring game is scheduled for Saturday, and a list of highly touted prospects will be visiting Ann Arbor to take in the game.

Right now, the Wolverines are sitting at No. 13 in the 2018 recruiting class rankings with five total commits, but we could potentially see some more commitments this weekend, which would elevate Michigan back into the top 10.

Here’s a look at the big names that will be on campus.

Dorian Thompson-Robinson, 4-Star QB

When Jedd Fisch left Michigan to take the offensive coordinator job at UCLA, it dampened the Wolverines’ chances at landing the Las Vegas prospect. The Bruins were already a heavy contender to secure his commitment, but Fisch’s move to Los Angeles made UCLA the heavy favorite.

Pep Hamilton took over for Fisch in Ann Arbor, and he’s been leading the charge in Thompson-Robinson’s recruitment. He’ll have to make sure the visit goes perfectly in order to keep the Bishop Gorman quarterback from staying out west.

Brevin Jordan, 4-Star TE

Thompson-Robinson’s teammate at Bishop Gorman, Brevin Jordan, has quickly become one of the most electrifying tight ends in the 2018 recruiting class. And his list of suitors is nothing short of powerful. A diverse collection of programs are after Jordan, including Miami, Michigan, UCLA and USC.

He visited the Hurricanes on Tuesday, but Michigan can make a huge leap with this visit. Devin Asiasi just transferred from Michigan to UCLA, so the Bruins conceivably fell behind in that respect — based on pure positional need. But Miami is going to be the biggest hurdle for his pledge.

Mustapha Muhammad, 4-Star TE

As mentioned, the Wolverines need tight ends. Jake Butt’s graduation left a hole in the offense that was supposed to be filled by Asiasi, but he’s gone back home to Los Angeles. And if Michigan can’t close the deal with Jordan, Mustapha Muhammad isn’t exactly a consolation prize.

The guy can serve as an elite receive weapon at the next level, and Michigan would find ways to get him involved early on. But Clemson is also looking to replace Jordan Leggett, so it will be a big player for his commitment. Florida State, LSU, Texas and Texas A&M are all among the other programs vying for Muhammad at the moment.

Joe Milton, 4-Star QB

Fewer quarterbacks have had the kind of meteoric rise that Joe Milton has had this offseason. He’s collected a nice set of offers over the past few months, and the competition for his commitment will be thick.

For awhile, Milton was seen as a lock for the Florida Gators, but that is far from the case now. Florida State and Georgia have both entered the mix, and the Wolverines are looking to get into the action, too. If Michigan swings and misses on Thompson-Robinson, Milton would fly up their board and become a much bigger priority.

Shayne Simon, 4-Star Safety/Outside Linebacker

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: Michigan reaches into New Jersey to nab a highly touted safety. Shayne Simon is built a little differently from Jabrill Peppers, though. He’s more advanced in coverage than Peppers was at this age, and that’s why programs like Notre Dame and Penn State are in hot pursuit.

At this point, at least, this appears to be Michigan’s race to lose. Whether or not Harbaugh’s staff decides to play him at safety or outside linebacker, it won’t matter. Peppers did well in that system, and Simon likely will too if he ends up in Ann Arbor as expected.

Marquan McCall, 4-Star OG

It’s not as though Michigan hasn’t gotten involved in recruiting battles with Michigan State before. It happens every year, and 2017 is no different. The Spartans are looking to beef up their offensive line with Marquan McCall, who’s from Oak Park, Michigan, but the Wolverines won’t go down without a fight.

Ohio State and Tennessee are also in the mix here, but it will take a lot to pull McCall away from home. At the end of the day, a great visit in Ann Arbor this weekend could push Michigan into the lead.

Gemon Green, 4-Star CB

This seems to be just a formality at this point for Gemon Green. TCU has been all over Gemon Green, and it will take a lot to pull him away from the DeSoto native out of the Lone Star State. Colorado, Oklahoma State and Oregon are among the other teams chasing him.

German Green, 3-Star Safety

His brother, German Green, is in a similar position, but there is a catch here. The 3-star safety missed all of last season with a torn ACL, so his stock could rise dramatically with a healthy senior season. Michigan put its offer on the table on March 16, about a month after the Wolverines offered his brother. A great visit can do a lot, but this might not be anything more than a chance to see what’s outside of Texas.
