The No. 4 Michigan State Spartans will host the No. 16 Iowa Hawkeyes on Thursday night in what’ll be a rematch from the end of December.

The Spartans (16-1, 3-1 Big Ten) are happy to have Denzel Valentine back in the mix after missing time due to an injury. He helped Michigan State dismantle Penn State, 92-65, at home last time out. The Spartans led the entire way in this one and never saw their lead dip below 12 in the second half. Bryn Forbes led all scorers with 20 points, which came all in the first half, while Eron Harris and Gavin Schilling each posted 13 points apiece. Valentine totaled 23 minutes off the bench in his first game back and finished with 10 points. Looking ahead at the schedule, Michigan State takes on Wisconsin (Jan. 17) and Nebraska (Jan. 20) before welcoming No. 3 Maryland to town on Jan. 23.

The Hawkeyes (12-3, 3-0 Big Ten) have won two straight since their shocking win over Michigan State having beaten then-No. 14 Purdue on the road and Nebraska last time out. Iowa dug themselves a hole as Nebraska jumped out to a quick 10-0 lead, but the Hawkeyes turned up the pressure and found themselves up nine at the half. Iowa kept its foot on the pedal in the second half and cruised to a 77-66 victory. Jarrod Uthoff continued his stellar season as he led all scorers with 25 points while adding eight boards and four blocked shots. Mike Gesell wasn’t far behind with 22 points and 10 assists, his third 10+ assist game of the year.

Thursday’s rematch will be the 126th between Michigan State and Iowa, a series in which the Spartans lead 71-54.

Prediction

Michigan State smells blood, and it’ll get the revenge it’s seeking. Valentine will start to feel a little bit more like himself and hit double figures again. Forbes will still lead the Spartans in scoring, but they’ll both get what they want on offense. Uthoff also won’t be stopped, but the Spartans will control the glass and limit the Hawkeyes’ second-chance looks. Michigan State wins a close one.
