Why You Need To Care

This one is a tale of two teams. On one side of the court, you have the monumental basketball program built up by Tom Izzo. The No. 1-ranked Spartans are 9-0 and have won all but two of their games by double digits. Who were the two teams to give Izzo’s guys a challenge? Kansas lost by six and Louisville lost by four. So, take that as you will.

Michigan State’s latest victim was Binghamton on Saturday. The Spartans beat the Bearcats 76-33. Izzo’s squad is playing with a purpose.

Now the team on the other end of the court happens to be the Maryland-Eastern Shore Hawks. It’s been a rough season for them, having lost seven of their first eight games.

The Hawks snapped a four-game losing streak by beating Saint Francis (PA)70-57 at home. But since then, a three-game losing streak has ensued.

And it seems like the Hawks are in for their second four-game losing streak of the season.

Why Michigan State Will Win

It’s been said before, and it will be said again. Denzel Valentine is one of the best players in the country. He’s been filling up the stat sheet for nine games so far, and he’ll keep on doing it until someone rises to the occasion to stop him (19.7 points, 8.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists). Valentine will chase a triple-double in this one and provide some separation between the Spartans and Maryland-Eastern Shore. Bryn Forbes will be right by his side, knocking down threes to cushion the lead. Michigan State will have to force some turnovers and get into some transition offense to really put this one away early.

Why Maryland-Eastern Shore Will Win

Honestly, there aren’t many things the Hawks can do here to take this game. It’s on Michigan State’s home floor, against one of the nation’s best players, and one of the best college basketball coaches ever. It’s going to be an uphill battle for 40 minutes. Maryland-Eastern Shore, to have a chance, will have to limit the unforced errors. You can’t turn the ball over 17.6 times per game and expect to beat the Spartans. The Hawks need Devin Martin and Dominique Elliott to have the games of their lives in this one. Martin and Elliot combine for an average of 26.2 points per game. But as a team, the Hawks have to shoot better than 29.7 percent from three.

What’s Going To Happen?

Inefficient shooting will plague the Hawks, but that will only add to the problem. Valentine will torch Maryland-Eastern Shore in transition, in the half-court offense, on the boards, on defense … basically, Valentine won’t be stopped. Forbes will deliver some dagger-esque triples to increase the Spartans’ lead. Michigan State should take a large lead in the first half and never look back, coasting for the win.
