Report: Monte Kiffin To Join Son Lane At FAU

Monte Kiffin will reportedly join his son Lane’s coaching staff at FAU, becoming the third Kiffin family member on the Owls staff.

There’s going to be a little family reunion happening in Boca Raton at the Florida Atlantic football facility.

Per Sporting News, Monte Kiffin will be joining the Owls’ coaching staff and working under his son, Lane, who became the head coach in December. Chris Kiffin, the younger brother of Lane, is already on staff as the defensive coordinator.

This won’t be the first time that father and son have teamed together, with Monte serving as Lane’s defensive coordinator during his only season in Knoxville as the head coach of the Tennessee Volunteers, and as an assistant head coach during Lane’s time as the head coach at USC.

Monte’s resume speaks for itself. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest defensive minds in football history, as the creator of the “Tampa Cover 2” defense that has been adopted by numerous teams and defensive coaches.

This past season, Monte served as a defensive assistant for the Jacksonville Jaguars after spending two seasons heading the defense for the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite being around the game as a coach or assistant since 1966 – he started as a graduate assistant at Nebraska – Monte was only a head coach once: from 1980-82 at NC State, where he recorded a 16-17 overall record.
