Nebraska vs. Maryland prediction and game preview. The Cornhuskers look to deal the Terrapins a fourth straight loss Saturday.
Nebraska vs. Maryland Game Preview
When: Saturday, Nov. 19 – Noon ET
Where: Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Neb.
TV Broadcast: ESPNEWS
Nebraska once had a two-game lead in the Big Ten East and seemed poised to play in the conference title game. Then came an overtime loss to Wisconsin and a 59-point blowout at the hands of Ohio State, and suddenly the Cornhuskers need help to get to Indianapolis. They’ll have to beat Maryland and Iowa and hope Wisconsin falls to either Purdue or Minnesota.
Maryland isn’t going to lay down, though. It is trying to become bowl-eligible in its first year under D.J. Durkin, just one season after the Terps went 3-9. They’ve dropped three in a row, though, and need a win either this week or next week against Rutgers to get to the six-win mark.
What To Know About Nebraska
Nebraska is coming off a 24-17 win over Minnesota, but it certainly didn’t come easily. The Golden Gophers held the lead in the third quarter before the Huskers scored the game’s final two touchdowns as Tommy Armstrong threw a scoring pass and ran for another touchdown. Armstrong looked great after getting knocked out of the Ohio State game, completing 19 of 27 passes with two touchdowns and adding 61 yards on the ground. The defense also recovered, holding Minnesota to 265 yards after being run over by the Buckeyes.
What To Know About Maryland
Maryland didn’t fare any better against Ohio State than Nebraska, losing by the same 62-3 score last week. It was just seven days after Michigan trounced the Terps, 59-3, in Ann Arbor. Losing five of their last six games has put their bowl hopes in jeopardy, and starting quarterback Perry Hills is dealing with yet another injury. Durkin said Hills is day to day, leaving his status for this weekend unclear. Caleb Rowe and Tyrrell Pigrome both saw time against the Buckeyes after Hills exited.
Offense: Nebraska – Maryland’s quarterback situation is enough to give Nebraska the edge here.
Defense: Nebraska – The defensive-minded Durkin has a long way to go. The Terps are 13th in the Big Ten in total defense.
Special Teams: Maryland – The Huskers have one of the worst punt-coverage units in the conference in terms of average yardage allowed.
Coaching: Nebraska – Mike Riley has done a great job getting the Huskers back on track this season.
Intangibles: Even – This is the first meeting since Maryland joined the conference.
Matchup To Watch
Maryland’s QBs vs. Nebraska’s defense
No one knows yet who the Terps will start under center. And even if it’s Hills, there’s no guarantee he’ll still be healthy by game’s end. Nebraska ranks 10th in the Big Ten in pass defense, but that might not matter if Maryland can’t find any consistency at the position.
Spread: Nebraska -14.5
Over/Under: No Line
