Ohio State Football Recruiting Update – December 11, 2016

Ohio State football recruiting update as of December 11, 2016. Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes are trying to recapture the No. 1 class in the 2017 recruiting cycle.

We’ve come to the breaking point. On Monday, the dead period in the recruiting cycle will set in, and face-to-face contact between coaches and recruits will not be allowed until mid-January.

Urban Meyer might not have to worry about that, though. He and his staff have put in a lot of work and have the most 5-star commitments in the country right now with six.

The most recent member of Ohio State’s 5-star group is Baron Browning, the No. 2 outside linebacker and No. 25 overall player in the 2017 recruiting class. Browning pledged to the Buckeyes on Dec. 1, but he may not be the last 5-star commit Ohio State lands in this cycle.

There are three more 5-star prospects on the Buckeyes’ watch list, and their shots at landing them are pretty solid: 5-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson, 5-star athlete Jeffrey Okudah and 5-star running back Cam Akers.

For Okudah and Wilson, Ohio State will have to continue to fight off both Florida State and Oklahoma. LSU and Texas are also hanging around for Wilson but seem to be a little further out of the picture at the moment. Akers, a former Alabama commit, is also considering FSU, but Ole Miss appears to be the biggest threat in his commitment considering the Rebels are the home-state team.

Again, there is a legitimate shot the Buckeyes could land all three, and with possibly nine 5-star commitments on board by National Signing Day, that would be the most for one class since Meyer landed 10 with Florida in 2007.

Ohio State got some great news Sunday when it landed 4-star outside linebacker Pete Werner, a former Notre Dame commit. Werner was on campus for a visit this past weekend.
