Ohio State vs. Indiana prediction and game preview. The Buckeyes are heavy favorites when they host the Hoosiers on Saturday.
Ohio State vs. Indiana Game Preview
When: Saturday, Oct. 8 – 7 p.m. ET
Where: High Point Solutions Stadium, Piscataway, NJ.
TV Broadcast: ESPN2
Remember that time Oklahoma’s backup quarterback called Ohio State’s defense “basic?” That might’ve served as enough motivation to last the Buckeyes the rest of the year. They held Rutgers to 116 total yards in a 58-0 romp and forced the Scarlet Knights to punt 10 times. From there, J.T. Barrett set the Ohio State record for career touchdown passes, finishing with four – all to different receivers.
That talent on both sides of the ball will be far better than what Indiana saw against Michigan State last week. The Hoosiers took advantage of a plethora of mistakes to upset the then-No. 17 Spartans, 24-21 in overtime. Richard Lagow is a decent quarterback, but he’s also interception-prone, and that doesn’t bode well going against this Ohio State secondary.
What to Know About Ohio State
The Buckeyes’ defense has gotten a lot of attention, and deservedly so with players like Malik Hooker and Marshon Lattimore helping it secure three each of its nine interceptions. But Ohio State’s offense is just as good.
Barrett has accounted for 17 touchdowns and helped the Buckeyes finish with 669 total yards last week against Rutgers. Shockingly, that’s not even the most they’ve put up this season. Bowling Green got torched for 776 yards and 77 points in the season opener.
Ohio State is outscoring opponents 228-37, but the competition hasn’t been all that good, either. It’ll get a little better against the Hoosiers this week.
What to Know About Indiana
Indiana’s win over Michigan State could be considered lucky. Griffin Oakes missed a 35-yard field goal in overtime, only to get a chance to win it again from 20 yards out after the Spartans committed a leaping personal foul penalty trying to block the first kick. Still, it goes down as a big win for the Hoosiers.
What required more than luck was Lagow throwing two touchdown passes and catching another. Indiana went 9-for-16 on third downs. Things won’t come as easily against Ohio State, but the Hoosiers at least have some extra confidence heading into Columbus.
Offense: Ohio State – Barrett, Mike Weber and Co. are just too much for the Hoosiers to handle.
Defense: Ohio State – One of the best units in the country.
Special Teams: Ohio State – Oakes is having a rough year with field goals, and the Hoosiers cannot afford to leave points on the field.
Coaching: Ohio State – It’s a rare day that you pick against Urban Meyer and his staff.
Intangibles: Ohio State – The gap in talent is far too wide.
