Report: Tom Herman To Be Hired As Texas Head Coach

Tom Herman is expected to be hired as the next head coach at Texas. The Houston program-builder will take over for Charlie Strong.

Tom Herman landed the job he wanted all along.

According to ESPN’s Heather Dinich, Texas will hire Herman as its new head football coach, with an official announcement expected sometime on Saturday. Kirk Bohls of the Austin American-Statesman reports that Herman will receive a five-year deal worth more than $5 million per year with escalators to over $6M in the final year of the deal.

LSU reportedly was deeply involved in the Herman sweepstakes after Jimbo Fisher turned the Tigers down and opted to stay at Florida State, but Herman’s desire to lead the program in Austin prompted the Bayou Bengals to retain Ed Orgeron. The Longhorns announced on Saturday that they had fired Charlie Strong after three seasons at the helm, clearing the way for the imminent Herman announcement.

Herman isĀ 22-4 overall as a head coach, logging notable wins over Louisville (twice), Florida State and Oklahoma in his two seasons at Houston. The Cougars went 13-1 last year and 9-3 this season, although the losses came to Navy, SMU and Memphis. The Cougars’ regular season concluded with a loss on Saturday to the Tigers.

Prior to taking over at UH, Herman coached under Urban Meyer at Ohio State as the Buckeyes’ offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach from 2012-14.

It has long been known that Herman’s dream job has been as head man at Texas. He began his career as a Longhorns graduate assistant under Mack Brown (1999-2000) and spent roughly a decade as an assistant coach in the state, including stops at Texas Lutheran, Sam Houston State, Texas State and Rice.

Herman also has strong ties to the high school coaches in the state, which will help keep that pipeline of top talent funneling into Austin.
