Tennessee vs. Texas A&M Game Preview

When: Saturday, October 8 – 3:30 p.m. ET
Where: Kyle Field, College Station, TX
TV Broadcast: CBS

Both of these teams come into this huge SEC matchup with perfect records, but have done it in totally different ways. A last-second Hail Mary saved Tennessee from its first loss this past weekend against Georgia, while the Aggies have looked like the closest contender to Alabama in the SEC West.

Both teams are led by veteran quarterbacks who don’t get fazed under pressure, while their defenses are full of playmakers that challenge opponents’ offensive lines. This should be a good one.

What To Know About Tennessee

The Volunteers look like a team of destiny so far this season, surviving an opening-game scare from Appalachian State, throttling back in the second half against Florida, and then delivering the dramatics last week in Athens to keep national championship hopes alive. Quarterback Joshua Dobbs is Tennessee’s motor when it comes to the offense, and will try to beat the Aggies with his arm and feet.

The Volunteers defense, specifically the secondary, will have its hands full against a Texas A&M offense that loves to speed up the pace at all times. Slowing down the deep wide receiving corps, which includes Christian Kirk and Josh Reynolds, will be priority number one for the Vols.

What to Know About Texas A&M

Quarterback Trevor Knight has fit right in on the Aggies’ offense, spreading out the ball to both the wide receivers and running backs and using the running game to keep it balanced. The Aggies are 13th in the nation, averaging 521 yards per game.

Getting defensive end Myles Garrett back for this game after missing out in the win against South Carolina will be huge for the Aggies. Seemingly unstoppable, Garrett takes up a lot of attention from opposing offenses, creating room for others on the defense to create havoc as well.

Advantages

Offense: Texas A&M. This is a close call, but the pure depth that the Aggies have at wide receiver put them over the top.

Defense: Tie. With Garrett, the Aggies are a force on defense. You can’t look past what Derek Barnett and the Vols can do, though.

Special Teams: Tie. Both kickers haven’t missed an extra point this season and have been decent on field goals.

Coaching: Texas A&M. Kevin Sumlin has got his mojo back in College Station.

Intangibles: Tennessee. Do you believe in destiny? Wins like the one for Tennessee last week go a long way in determining champions.

Matchup To Watch

Myles Garrett (if healthy) vs. Tennessee offensive line

The Volunteers offensive line has a tendency to get pushed around at times. If Garrett is healthy, they will have their hands full.

Tennessee vs. Texas A&M Prediction

Tennessee is lucky to be undefeated this far into the season, but good teams sometimes make their own luck. Since the preseason, the Volunteers have had a lot of pressure on them to come through with a big year, and so far they have done it. Not this week, though. The combination of the Aggies offense and the crowd noise at Kyle Field will overwhelm Butch Jones’ team, and Texas A&M will prove once again that it is a force to be reckoned with in the SEC

Tennessee vs. Texas A&M Score Prediction: Texas A&M 35, Tennessee 28
