Tulane vs. Tulsa Game Preview

When: Saturday, October 22 – 3:45 p.m. ET
Where: Chapman Stadium, Tulsa, OK
TV Broadcast: ESPNU

Tulane held tough, but ended up falling to Memphis this past weekend 24-14. Quarterback Glen Cuiellette remains inaccurate throwing the ball, completing just 11-for-30 in the air for 144 yards and one touchdown and an interception. The ground game was shut down as well, gaining only 169 yards.

Tulsa is also coming off a tough loss, a 38-31 defeat to Houston. Quarterback Dane Evans was okay, throwing for 365 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Golden Hurricane’s rushing attack must get going (only 94 yards against Houston) to balance the offense.

What To Know About Tulane

The Green Wave offense lives by running the ball, which makes the 169 yards against Memphis unacceptable. Cuiellette is okay at quarterback, but he’s not going to win games by himself. There’s a reason Tulane is No. 22 in rushing offense, averaging 233.6 yards per game. If Tulsa has success stopping the run (and they haven’t so far this year, allowing 174.17 yards per game on the ground), the Green Wave offense will stall.

What to Know About Tulsa

Tulsa’s offense is a lot more balanced this year than in the past, with a rushing attack that averages 207.67 yards per game. That benefits Evans, who when given time, can pick a defense apart. Tulane’s defense is stingy, though, allowing 324 yards per game, including just 182.2 through the air.

Advantages

Offense: Tulsa. The Golden Hurricane are much more balanced than Tulane.

Defense: Tulane. Defense is allowing only 22.7 points per game.

Special Teams: Tie. Both placekickers have been erratic on field goal attempts.

Coaching: Tulsa. It feels like Tulsa has become a stop on the way to the big time for coaches.

Intangibles: Tulsa. A close loss to Houston can give the Golden Hurricane some confidence.

Tulane vs. Tulsa Prediction

Tulane will be able to get the ground game going again, taking pressure off of Cuiellette, and the Green Wave will be able to make some stops early. Tulsa will make the necessary adjustments at halftime, and Evans will play well in the second half to give the Golden Hurricane the win.
