Two Ohio State Commits Named Offensive And Defensive Players Of The Year

Two Ohio State commits have been named USA TODAY High School Sports offensive and defensive players of the year.

The recruiting class Urban Meyer and the Ohio State Buckeyes are putting together for 2017 is a monster.

The Buckeyes currently have commitments from six five-star players and 10 4-star prospects. They lead the nation in 4-star commits, and now are also tops in the country with regards to USA TODAY high school players of the year.

Two Ohio State commits were named the ALL-USA offensive and defensive players of the year.

Five-star quarterback Tate Martell earned ALL-USA Offensive Player of the Year, while 4-star cornerback commit Shaun Wade picked up ALL-USA Defensive Player of the Year.

Landing one USA TODAY player of the year would make for a banner recruiting class; adding both takes things to a different strata.

Martell, ranked by Scout as the nation’s No. 2 quarterback, has been the cornerstone of the Buckeyes’ 2017 class since his commitment this past summer. Martell has been vocal and active in helping to build what’s shaping up to be one of the greatest recruiting hauls in history. In addition to USA TODAY’s offensive player of the year, Gatorade also tabbed him its National Player of the Year.

Wade is the latest commitment for the Buckeyes, pledging on Dec. 12. Meyer plucked him out of Jacksonville, Florida, typically a hotspot for both the Florida State Seminoles and Meyer’s former employer, the Florida Gators.

Since the start of December, Meyer has added three Scout 300 players – 5-star outside linebacker Baron Browning, 4-star outside linebacker Pete Werner and 4-star cornerback Shaun Wade. They are ranked No. 25, No. 266 and No. 56, respectively.

The Buckeyes have also positioned themselves nicely for 5-star recruits Darnay Holmes, Marvin Wilson and Jeffrey Okudah, as well as four-star prospect Jay Tufele, who is one of the highest-ranked 4-star recruits.
