Tyreke Johnson Recruiting Profile

CI 25 Overall Ranking: No. 9
CI 25 Position Ranking: No. 1
Hometown: Jacksonville, Florida
School: Trinity Christian Academy
Position: ATH
Height: 6’2″
Weight: 185 lbs

Playing Style

He might be the most versatile athlete in the entire class. Tyreke Johnson can do everything — literally everything. He’s explosive with the ball in his hands, but the higher ceiling for him probably lies on the defensive side of the ball. He can impact the game as a cornerback, but he’s dangerous as a safety. Johnson breaks on the ball cleanly and quickly and seems to always find a way to get his hands on it.

Florida is trying to re-stock its secondary with game-changing defensive backs, and Johnson would fit right in. With Marcell Harris and Nick Washington on the way out, Johnson could start right away for the Gators. But the same could be said for Florida State, who is getting ready to lose Derwin James after the 2017 season, as he’ll likely head to the 2018 NFL Draft.

What They’re Saying

“His size jumps out right away. Johnson is a long athlete who really looks natural at defensive back.” – Scout

“Brings a unique blend of size and athleticism to the cornerback position.” – Luke Stampini, 247Sports

Recruiting Overview

Early in his recruitment, many people pegged Johnson to end up at Florida State. Now, that doesn’t appear to be the case. Jim McElwain has done a great job of staying involved and keeping tabs on Johnson. With Corey Bell having replaced Torrian Gray as the Gators’ defensive backs coach, it will be tough for another program to overtake Florida here.

Alabama and Georgia won’t go down without a fight, and you can expect UCLA to make a strong play for Johnson’s commitment as well. However, Bell will continue to sell Johnson on the idea of staying close to home and building his legacy in Gainesville.
