UNLV Coach T.J. Otzelberger Signs Five-Year Contract: Salary, Incentives, Buyout

Former South Dakota State Coach T.J. Otzelberger made the jump to UNLV in the latest coaching cycle as he signed a five-year contract on March 27, 2019 to coach the Runnin’ Rebels. Stadium obtained the contract via public records request.

Otzelberger’s annual salary is broken down below:

  • Contract Year 1 (March 27, 2019 – June 30, 2020): $1.1 million
  • Contract Year 2 (July 1, 2020 – June 30, 2021): $1.2 million
  • Contract Year 3 (July 1, 2021 – June 30, 2022): $1.3 million
  • Contract Year 4 (July 1, 2022 – June 30, 2023): $1.4 million
  • Contract Year 5 (July 1, 2023 – June 30, 2024): $1.5 million

 

His base salary is $350,000 annually, he’ll earn a one-time gross payment of $25,000 within 10 days of beginning employment, plus he’ll receive Media and Public Appearance Fees/Name, Image and Likeness Fees as outlined below:

  • Contract Year 1: $375,000
  • Contract Year 2: $425,000
  • Contract Year 3: $475,000
  • Contract Year 4: $525,000
  • Contract Year 5: $575,000

Here are the performance-based incentives available to Otzelberger:

  • $25,000 – For winning or tying the conference regular season championship.
  • $25,000 – For winning the conference tournament.
  • $10,000 – For receiving the conference coach of the year award.
  • $25,000 – For receiving National Coach of the Year.
  • $25,000 – For earning an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament.
  • $10,000 – For the team advancing in each round.
  • $50,000 – For the team playing in the Final Four.
  • $100,000 – For the team winning the national championship.
  • $15,000 – For the team earning an at-large bid to the NIT (not by winning the conference regular season championship).
  • $25,000 – For the team winning the NIT.
  • $5,000 – For the team achieving an APR score of 980 at the conclusion of each academic year.

 

If Otzelberger is fired, UNLV will owe him his base salary, media and public appearances fee, and name, image and likeness fee for the remaining period of the contract term.

If Otzelberger leaves UNLV, he’ll owe the university his base salary, the media and public appearances fee, and the name, image and likeness fee for the period of time remaining in the term, multiplied by the following percentages:

If terminated on or before June 30, 2021: 75%

If terminated on or after July 1, 2021: 25%

If Otzelberger terminates the contract on or before June 30, 2023, the amount owed will be whatever is greater between $1 million and the amount owed following the percentages outlined above.
