Duke freshmen Zion Williamson and R.J. Barrett were named to the five-player First Team Associated Press All-America team Tuesday, making them the first freshman teammates since Kentucky’s John Wall and DeMarcus Cousins in 2010 to earn the honor.
Murray State’s Ja Morant, Michigan State’s Cassius Winston and Tennessee’s Grant Williams round out the First Team.
Williamson and Barrett are the first Duke teammates to average at least 20 points per game in the same season since 1978. They both finished at 22.6 points per game.
To add further context, blue bloods Kentucky, North Carolina and Indiana haven’t had a pair of teammates reach those scoring averages since the mid-1960s.
The Second Team included Purdue’s Carsen Edwards, Marquette’s Markus Howard, Texas Tech, Jarrett Culver, Gonzaga’s Rui Hachimura and Wisconsin’s Ethan Happ.
Virginia teammates Kyle Guy and De’Andre Hunter made the Third Team, along with Kentucky’s PJ Washington, Gonzaga’s Brandon Clarke and Kansas’ Dedric Lawson.
Three teams – Duke, Gonzaga and Virginia – had multiple players named to one of the three AP All-America teams.
