    Why You Need To Care

North Texas’ miserable season, which could be Dan McCarney’s swan song, continued with Saturday’s 49-14 loss to Southern Miss. The Mean Green has dropped all four games by at least two touchdowns, as hope quickly fades in Denton. Portland State is after its second FBS win, having already dropped Washington State in the opener. The Vikings, though, must rebound from an emotional Big Sky Conference loss to North Dakota.

    Why Portland State Will Win

The defense is solid by the FCS measuring stick, which means its salty enough to thwart North Texas. The Vikings yield just 12.5 points per game, and gave up only 17 to Wazzu. LB Jeremiah Lutali has been everywhere, and DBs Xavier Coleman and Patrick Onwuasor have three picks apiece.

    Why North Texas Will Win

Solid D at Portland State, yes. But the Vikings were run on by North Dakota last weekend. And RB Jeffrey Wilson is the Mean Green’s most dependable player, rushing for 211 yards on 37 carries the last two games. Plus, Portland State is having problems winning the line of scrimmage and passing the ball consistently.

    Player Who Matters

The Mean Green defense is in disarray, giving up 45 points per game. But it’ll have a singular objective this week, stopping Viking QB Alex Kuresa, who leads the team in rushing. If Kuresa is contained on the ground, Portland State has shown no signs of having a viable No. 2 option on offense.

    What’s Going To Happen?

North Texas is a bad team, one of the worst in the FBS. But it’ll seize this opportunity to win a game against a Portland State team coming off a tough loss and having to break from conference play with a long road trip. Wilson will carry the Mean Green to a hard-fought win.
