1. Racial Tensions And A Sick Coach – October 1953 – Notre Dame Stadium (South Bend, IN) – Georgia Tech came into South Bend with a 31-game unbeaten streak, and were the defending national champions. Racial tensions were still high in the South, and Notre Dame had two African-American players. This was at a time when white players did not play black players. Despite this, Georgia Tech head coach Bobby Dodd said “game on,” and the Yellow Jackets traveled to Notre Dame eyeing another win. During the first half, Irish head coach Frank Leahy suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Seen crying at halftime, the Irish came out in the second half and ended up winning the game, breaking the Yellow Jackets’ streak.
2. The Wishbone – November 6, 1976 – Grant Field (Atlanta, GA) – The Yellow Jackets shocked the No. 11 Irish 23-14 by running the wishbone attack, attempting only one pass all game. After quarterback Gary Lanier got sacked on the only attempt, Jackets coach Pepper Rodgers did not call another pass play and Georgia Tech went on to rack up 368 rushing yards in the victory.
3. The Greatest Tie – November 8, 1980 – Grant Field (Atlanta, GA) – Unbeaten and top-ranked Notre Dame came to Grant Field with national title expectations. Georgia Tech and coach Bill Curry had other plans. The game ended in a 3-3 tie.
