The Oklahoma Sooners are ranked as a top-10 team for the first time since Blake Griffin was flying through the air in Norman, Okla. seven years ago.
Well, Griffin’s gone, but the Sooners are back. With a 65-48 win against Wisconsin on Sunday, Lon Kruger’s team improved to 4-0. Though a win against Central Arkansas would push them to 5-0 for the first time since — you guessed it — Griffin was at Oklahoma. That team went 12-0 to start the season.
The Bears may be the proverbial deer staring into the headlights of a runaway Sooners offense. Oklahoma is averaging 82.5 points per game, and head coach Russ Pennell’s team is givin up 85 points per game. That’s a dangerous cobination … for the Bears.
Central Arkansas’ only win was against the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners. A loss to Arkansas-Little Rock Tuesday slapped the Bears with a 1-5 record.
This might get ugly.
The Sooners are just the overall better team. They’re shooting 48 percent from the field and 40.5 percent from three. A big reason for that is senior guard Buddy Hield, who leads the team with 22 points per game. The next man up on that list is Ryan Spangler. He’s been putting up a cool 13 points and 10 rebounds per game.
If the Bears are going to have a shot, they need to make, well, shots — like all of them. Oklahoma has forced its opponents into hoisting the lowest shooting percentage in the country at 31.5 percent. Jordan Howard, Derreck Brooks and Justin Foreman are combining for 41.5 points per game. That trio will have to step up in this one.
The Sooners are going to go all school-yard bully on the Bears. When Oklahoma takes this win, it might take Central Arkansas’ lunch money, too. Hield is going to go off for 20 points, but all of the Sooners will get in on the action. The Bears will score here and there, however Oklahoma will knock down daggers from the perimeter to shut that down quickly.
