Old Dominion and Norfolk State are separated by just a brisk five-mile walk across town, so local bragging rights will be at stake this Saturday at Foreman Field. The Monarchs used a second-half rally to get past Eastern Michigan on the road last week. The Spartans, meanwhile, were steamrolled by Rutgers, 63-13.
The Spartans enjoyed some early offensive success versus Rutgers with QB Greg Hankerson and WR DeAndre Sangster. They’ll roll even longer against an FCS-caliber Old Dominion defense that yielded 444 total yards to hapless Eastern Michigan in Week 1.
The future is bright for the Monarch offense. Redshirt freshman QB Shuler Bentley displayed maximum poise in his first game, while true sophomore RB Ray Lawry rumbled for 223 yards and four touchdowns. Norfolk State allowed eight offensive touchdowns last Saturday in Piscataway.
The Monarchs are pining for defensive playmakers this season. They may have found one in athletic rookie edge rusher Oshane Ximines, a hybrid between an end and a linebacker, who made a sack and a couple of tackles for loss in his debut.
Norfolk State is still reeling after being embarrassed by Rutgers. Old Dominion will pile on this weekend, dominating the battle of Norfolk behind a steady effort from Bentley and another prolific afternoon on the ground from Lawry.
Without further ado, the Old Dominion vs. Norfolk State prediction is …
