The Rebels looked like world-beaters for the first half of their Monday night season opener against Florida State. Quarterback Chad Kelly was throwing crisp passes, as Ole Miss took a 28-6 lead. Then it all fell apart. The offensive line couldn’t block, the defense couldn’t stop the Seminoles, and the Rebels went on to give up the 22-point lead in a 45-34 loss.

Wofford had a better season opener as it got a road win against Tennessee Tech, 21-7. The Terriers used the rushing trio of Will Gay, Lorenzo Long, and quarterback Brad Butler to pound for 346 yards on the ground while the dense held Tennessee Tech to just 257 total yards.

What To Know About Ole Miss

Which team will show up? After looking like an SEC and national title contender the first 30 minutes of the season opener, the Rebels collapsed. Kelly had absolutely no time to throw the ball against a swarming FSU defense. Kelly didn’t help himself though, throwing three interceptions and losing a fumble.

The Ole Miss defense can be nasty at times, but the sheer amount of time they spent on the field wore them down. Defensive end Marquis Haynes set up a tent in the Florida State backfield, getting by the offensive line numerous times.

    What to Know About Wofford

Everyone knows what Wofford is going to do on offense: run the ball, and then run it some more. The Terriers attempted only eight passes in the game against Tennessee Tech, and will try to pound the ball against the Rebels defense.

Safety JoJo Tillery has the size and speed to match up with the Rebels’ wide receivers and is a tackling machine, leading the Terriers with 11 total tackles in the season opener. Defensive lineman Tyler Vaughn will look to provide pressure on Kelly and force some turnovers.

    Advantages

Offense: Ole Miss. Kelly can be really good at times, such as the first half against Florida State.

Defense: Ole Miss. Sure, they gave up 45 points, but this unit has the talent to be dominant.

Special Teams: Ole Miss. Gary Wunderlich did double duty as both the kicker and punter for the Rebels.

Coaching: Ole Miss. Love him or hate him, Freeze has the Ole Miss program at a new level.

Intangibles: Ole Miss. After a season-opening loss, the Rebels will be angry and ready to get back on the victory side.

    Matchup To Watch

    Time On Field

Ole Miss’ defense simply wore down because the offense runs such a high-tempo style and doesn’t spend much time on the field. Now the Rebels face a team that runs the ball and controls the clock. Will Ole Miss’ legs run out again?

    Ole Miss vs. Wofford Prediction

An angry bunch of Black Bears…err, I mean Rebels will enter Vaught-Hemingway Stadium and have their way with the Terriers. Kelly will rebound and show why he was the preseason pick for First-Team All-SEC, and Wofford will barely be able to muster any rushing yards against the Rebels’ defense. This one will be over by halftime.

Ole Miss vs. Wofford Score Prediction: Ole Miss 63, Wofford 10
