The Pacers will be without their star for the rest of the year.

Star guard Victor Oladipo suffered a knee injury Wednesday night attempting to break up an outlet pass against the Raptors. Oladipo will miss the season after an MRI Thursday confirmed that he suffered a ruptured quad tendon.

This is a massive blow for the Pacers, who are competing for one of the top three seeds in the Eastern Conference. Indiana will likely fall out of that conversation with Oladipo out. The guard has struggled in the last two months after starting the season strong, but still leads the team in scoring at 19.2 points per game. He also dished 5.3 assists per contest, good for second on the team.

Advanced numbers suggest Oladipo’s injury won’t impact the Pacers as heavily as one would expect. The team was only 2.3 points worse per 100 possessions on offense with him off the court and slightly better defensively. This doesn’t account for the heavy minutes Oladipo played, but the Pacers theoretically have enough depth to buffer against a significant drop-off in the standings.

Indiana will lean on Myles Turner and Domantas Sabonis during Oladipo’s absence. The duo was expected to play a large role this season even before Turner signed a four-year, $80 million extension. Head coach Nate McMillan told me before the season he would play both centers together, but Sabonis and Turner have only been on the court for 230 minutes the entire season. They carry a +8.1 point differential per 100 possessions, so McMillan might have to adjust his rotations accordingly.

It’s unclear whether the Pacers will be major players at the trade deadline even with Oladipo’s injury. Indiana has several playmaking options getting good minutes. Rookie Aaron Holiday will likely see more time as a result of the injury, but the Pacers should lean on their big men more.

This is a big opportunity for Turner. His extension earlier in the season was due partly to the additional work he put in over the summer to get in better shape. Turner hasn’t lit the world on fire offensively, but he’s sending back shots at a career-high rate on the other end. His block percentage for the season is at 8.9 percent. If he keeps that up, it’ll be the 11th season in league history where a player recorded at least an 8.5 block percentage in at least 25 minutes per game. If Turner can shoulder the scoring load offensively in Oladipo’s absence, the Pacers will feel even better about their investment.

Indiana was in position to make noise at the top of the Eastern Conference with Oladipo leading the way. Now the Pacers will have to regroup and hope their supporting cast can step up.
