College Basketball Power Rankings for Week 16 of the season feature a repeat at the top and a heavy presence from the West Coast.

College Basketball Power Rankings for Week 16 of the season feature a repeat at the top and a heavy presence from the West Coast.

Note: These are the schools I believe are playing the best right now, not necessarily the Top 10 based on resume or AP Rankings.

    10) Baylor

Kansas may have the Bears’ number, but few other teams in the nation do. A rugged defense with elite rim protection and productive bigs that pursue two-point field goals make them a tough out.

    9) UNC

This team is quietly making a play for a No. 1 seed. The dismantling of Virginia to the tune of 24 points was a harsh reminder the Tar Heels are just as dangerous as any team in the nation.

    8) Duke

A team once 3-4 in the ACC, it appeared as if the sky was falling in Durham. Those fears seems so far in the rear view mirror these days. This team is rolling, having won seven straight. The scariest part: this team still hasn’t reached its full potential. They are saving that for March.

    7) UCLA

The Bruins are so Hollywood these days. So much so, they went and got a hype man in Lonzo Ball’s father. He may be reckless with his words, but somewhere in there lies some truth. Lonzo Ball is a star. One that is ready to cement himself as the truth in March.

    6) Arizona

Allonzo Trier has found his rhythm since returning for the Wildcats but Lauri Markkanen remains the X-factor for this team. An exotic bird at 7 feet with guard-like skills. When Markkanen is playing at a high level this team is scary.

    5) Oregon

The gold standard of the Pac-12. A balanced team. A balanced team loaded with talent, versatility, and athleticism. This team is chock-full of matchup problems for the opposition.

    4) Louisville

Donovan Mitchell is a flat out star. The Cardinals do a phenomenal job of dictating tempo in their games. Playing at a relentless pace, U of L wears its opponent out in 40 minutes.

    3) Gonzaga

Simply can’t put the Zags at No. 1. The West Coast Conference isn’t what it has been in years past. This Gonzaga team is special. The best team Mark Few has ever had. But they haven’t been tested like the two teams above them.

    2) Kansas

With consecutive wins over top 10 foes, Kansas is playing at a high level. It helps that Josh Jackson is playing like an upperclassmen and with the look of a top pick in this year’s draft. Kansas has shown the ability to win the close ones, a vital trait come tournament time.

    1) Villanova

Villanova is a balanced team blessed with multiple scorers. The ‘Cats have been the most consistent high level team all season long. They have a go-to playmaker in Josh Hart. However, the true difference maker has been the sublime point guard play of Jalen Brunson. You are only as good as your guard play in March and Brunson is special. It could be repeat time in Philly.
