With a victory over Nicholls State, Colorado will carry a three-game winning streak into Pac-12 play. While that alone won’t erase gaps with the likes of Oregon and UCLA, confidence and momentum will go a long way with a team like the Buffs. They hung on to beat rival Colorado State in overtime Saturday, despite being outgained. The 0-2 Colonels dropped their other game with an FBS team, Louisiana-Monroe, 47-0.
A visit to Boulder might be just what the sagging Colonel offense needs. Colorado yielded 500 yards in Denver last week, and its pass rush is impotent. Nicholls State will counter with the passing of Tuskani Figaro and the running of Tobias Lofton.
The Colonels’ opener with UL-Monroe provides a blueprint for this matchup. They gave up 370 passing yards and 40 first-half points in the loss. The Buffaloes will be every bit as effective, with Sefo Liufau to Nelson Spruce and a deep collection of backs freely moving the ball up and down the field.
The record is decent, but the line play has not been for the Buffaloes. The team has just four sacks in three games, and the O-line will miss injured LT Jeromy Irwin. C Alex Kelley is coming off a rough outing, as did Irwin’s successor, Sam Kronshage.
Colorado has plenty of issues that need to be addressed, from defense to the line play. On this day, however, the Buffaloes will roll through an overmatched FCS team without much resistance to get out of non-conference play 3-1.
Final Score: Colorado 58, Nicholls State 7, Line: No Line, o/u: No Line
