Report: Charlie Strong Is A Candidate For Miami Coaching Job

Charlie Strong is reportedly a candidate for the Miami Hurricanes' coaching job, and supposedly UM thinks Strong will listen.

It was almost two years ago that Charlie Strong decided to leave Louisville for the Texas Longhorns, choosing to replace the legendary Mack Brown.

It wasn’t easy for Strong to leave the program that gave him his first shot at being a head coach.

“I have so much respect for President [James] Ramsey and [athletic director] Tom Jurich. They have been great to me and my family, and it was very hard to say goodbye, but they know this was an opportunity I couldn’t pass up,” Strong said, acknowledging that coaching Texas was the opportunity of a lifetime.

But that once-in-a-lifetime job has not gone as planned for Strong. In two years, he’s 9-12, and in spite of the fact he’s been trying to rebuild the program, many have called for Strong to be fired.

If he is, the Miami Hurricanes might gladly take Strong off Texas’ hands. According to Inside The U of 247Sports, Strong is a candidate for Miami’s head coaching job.

“Texas head coach Charlie Strong is a candidate for the vacant University of Miami job that should be taken seriously,” writes David Lake.

The Hurricanes fired Al Golden this year after a 4-3 start and a 58-0 loss to the Clemson Tigers.

Strong has, well, “strong” ties to the “Sunshine State.” He had three stints on the Florida Gators’ coaching staff. Strong was a graduate assistant from 1983 to 1984 and then returned as an assistant coach from 1991 to 1993.

After a brief stop at Notre Dame and South Carolina, he returned to the Gators from 2004 to 2009 before Louisville hired him in 2010.

Strong’s reputation for recruiting South Florida prospects may be the strongest attraction for the Hurricanes. He would be the sixth head coach for Miami in the last 10 years — including two interim coaches.
