The UNLV Rebels will host the San Jose State Spartans at Sam Boyd Stadium on Saturday. Both teams are looking for their third win of the season.

UNLV snatched the Fremont Cannon back from in-state rival Nevada last week. The Wolf Pack got off to a slow start and the Rebels took advantage and led the entire way. Keith Whitely led UNLV with 76 yards rushing on 16 attempts and a score. Nevada shrank UNLV’s lead to 13-10 in the fourth quarter, but a 52-yard interception return for a touchdown by the Mountain West Player of the Week, LB Ryan McAleenan, sealed the victory for the Rebels.

San Jose State sits at 2-3 on the season and 1-1 in the Mountain West. The Spartans hope to turn it around after falling 35-21 in a non-conference affair at Auburn last week. Running back Tyler Earvin carved up the Tigers rushing 27 times for 160 yards and a touchdown, but the San Jose State defense couldn’t stop Auburn RB Peyton Barber, who was responsible for all five Tiger touchdowns.

Earvin was a big player in last seasons’ meeting between the Rebels and Spartans. The running back carried the ball 11 times for 137 yards, including a 83-yard run for a score, helping San Jose State knock off UNLV 33-10.

The Rebels and Spartans will meet for the 20th time on Saturday, with San Jose State leading the all-time series 13-5-1. The Spartans are winners of the past five matchups and the Rebels have not recorded a win in this series since 1994.

    Prediction

New head coach Tony Sanchez has UNLV playing with more confidence and enthusiasm in 2015. But Nevada has been in the Rebels’ heads over the past 10 years. And as long as the Pack can run the ball and consistently win at the line of scrimmage, the Fremont Cannon will remain in Reno.

    Game Notes

    • San Jose State’s Tyler Ervin has the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) individual best single-game marks in 2015 games played through October 3 for most rushing yards (300), most rushing attempts (42) and most all-purpose yards (345).
    • UNLV’s defense has nine interceptions after five games, which is tied for seventh in the nation. The nine picks, which have come courtesy of eight different players, are two more than all of last season by the Rebels.
    • In each of San José State’s first two seasons as a Mountain West member, the Spartans were 2-1 after three conference games. San José State can make it 2-1 in Mountain West action for the third season in a row.
