    Why You Need To Care

No. 11 Purdue has to be happy with its 9-0 record so far this season. It’s topped its opponents by an average of 23.9 points and picked up its most recent win against IUPUI, 80-53.

The Boilermakers enter as the No. 1-ranked defensive rebounding team in the country (296), and they’ll try and box out against the Bison, who have pulled down the 33rd-most offensive rebounds in the nation (115).

Howard is 6-3 and looking to ride the wave of a 71-69 win against North Carolina Central on Monday.

The Bison haven’t been to the NCAA tournament since the 1991-92 season, and sixth-year head coach Kevin Nickelberry knows a win against the Boilermakers can add some fuel to the fire in hope of breaking the tourney drought.

    Why Purdue Will Win

Head coach Matt Painter took the Boilermakers to a second-round exit in the tourney last season after a two-season absence. With nine straight victories to start the season, you just know he’s trying to ride the wave as we get closer to conference play. As long as Purdue occupies the paint on defense and continues to rebound the way it has been, Painter has to be happy. A.J. Hammons and Isaac Haas have combined for an average of 17.1 points and 13 rebounds per game. Big games from the two 7-footers will push Purdue to a win.

    Why Howard Will Win

The Bison absolutely need James Daniel to carry the team offensively. The junior guard brings a scoring average of 28.4 points per game to the table, and if he shoots 41.9 percent from the field against Purdue, it’ll get interesting. Daniel needs to limit the turnovers, though. He can’t average 4.1 turnovers per game if the offense is going to run through him. Purdue has taken the second-most free throws in nation (268) and hit the most (200), so getting the Boilermakers into foul trouble has to be the plan of attack.

    What’s Going To Happen?

Daniel has been scoring at a very high rate so far, but his volume shooting is going to hit a wall against Purdue. The Boilermakers allow their opponents to shoot just 33 percent from the field, and Daniel won’t be able to shoot his way through to a Bison victory. Purdue will force turnovers and protect the rim. Hammons and Haas will both go to work on the boards and in the paint.
