Baylor may soon have its next head football coach.
According to FootballScoop, the Bears have zeroed in on SMU’s Chad Morris to replace Art Briles, who was dismissed and replaced by Jim Grobe on an interim basis.
Morris is finishing his second full season with the Mustangs, and he has the SMU program close to a bowl berth after a two-win debut campaign. The Ponies won just one game the year before Morris was hired.
In addition to possessing one of the finest offensive minds in the college game, the Texas native is very familiar with the Lone Star State’s high school coaching ranks, which would be very important as he and his prospective staff try to salvage Baylor’s 2017 recruiting class.
New Baylor AD Mack Rhoades mentioned in September that maintaining Baylor’s strong offensive brand would be an important part of the hiring process, so bringing in Morris would make a ton of sense because of his offensive background.
While the Mustangs reportedly want to speak with Houston’s Tom Herman, as Rhoades hired Herman at Houston before he eventually ended up at Baylor via Missouri, it may be difficult to snatch up Herman with the impending Texas opening.
SMU, which is expected to offer Morris a contract extension and a raise to remain in Dallas, closes its regular season at home against Navy on Saturday afternoon. Meanwhile, Baylor will not complete its regular season until Dec. 3, when the Bears travel to West Virginia to face the Mountaineers.
