The San Jose State Spartans will face off against the Georgia State Panthers in Orlando on Dec. 19 for the inaugural Cure Bowl.

The Spartans (5-7, 4-4 MW) with make their 10th appearance in a bowl game and their first since 2012. San Jose State finished the 2015 season in a bit of a slide losing three of their last four games. Their last game of the regular season was a 40-23 loss at the hands of the Boise State Broncos. The Spartans hung tough early on and took a 10-9 lead into halftime, but the second half was a different story, as the Broncos outscored them 31-13 to close out the game. San Jose State had no answer for Jeremy McNichols who bullied the Spartans D for 192 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns (including and 88-yard TD). The Spartans feature back just couldn’t stack up as Tyler Ervin was held to just 52 yards on 11 carries. The lack of running production meant Kenny Potter had to take to the air frequently. He finished with 336 yards, three touchdowns and a pair of picks. The San Jose State receiving corps will look to build on a solid effort as Billy Freeman (7 rec, 109 yards, TD), Hansell Wilson (6 rec, 98 yards, TD) and Tim Crawley (5 rec, 51 yards, TD) all had an impact on the game offensively.

The Panthers (6-6, 5-3 Sun Belt) are making their first ever appearance in a bowl game since joining the FBS in 2013. Unlike its counterpart, Georgia State comes into this one hot having won four in a row to close out the regular season. Last time out, Georgia State upset in-state rival Georgia Southern in a lopsided, 34-7 affair. The game was competitive in the first half as the two squads went into the half locked at 7-7. However, the Panthers came out rolling in the second half as they scored 27 unanswered points to seal the win. Nick Arbuckle led the Georgia State offense hitting on 20 of 32 pass attempts for 346 yards and three touchdowns. His connection with Penny Hart tortured the Eagles defense all afternoon as Hart caught seven Arbuckle passes for 129 yards, including a 63-yard touchdown. Georgia State got it done on both sides of the ball as it gained 489 yards of total offense and held Georgia Southern to just 203.

In addition to their first bowl appearance, the AutoNation Cure Bowl will mark the first meeting between San Jose State and Georgia State.

    Prediction

The Georgia State passing game will work, but San Jose State will be too good defensively in key moments to keep Arbuckle from going crazy. However, the defense that slowed down the high-powered Georgia Southern offense to become bowl eligible will swarm around Tyler Ervin with veteran tackling machine linebacker Joseph Peterson coming up with a huge final game. The energy will be there from both sides, but San Jose State’s defense will be just a wee bit more effective in key moments.
