The second College Football Playoff Rankings of the 2016 season have been released. Alabama remains No. 1, while Washington moves up into the No. 4 slot.

The 12-person selection committee tasked with the challenge of putting together the third College Football Playoff released its second top 25 of the 2016 college football season on Tuesday night, and the group not so surprisingly maintained that Alabama is the best team in the country.

The Crimson Tide went on the road to Baton Rouge this past Saturday night for their annual battle with LSU, and Nick Saban’s squad was certainly tested. However, a suffocating defense helped put the Tide over the top and help them remain unbeaten and maintain the No. 1 spot in this week’s rankings.

Meanwhile, Clemson and Michigan kept their spots at No. 2 and No. 3, respectively, after easy wins last weekend. But we have a new No. 4 squad this week.

With Texas A&M’s loss to Mississippi State, Washington moved up and would now be in the national semifinals if the season ended today. Of course, however, we know that there is a long way to go between now and the end of the regular season. Plenty of football remains to be played, and several other teams remain in the CFP mix.

This was the second of six sets of rankings, but what really matters is the final one that gets released on December 4. But if the season ended today, the matchups for the College Football Playoff would be No. 1 Alabama vs. No. 4 Washington in the Peach Bowl and No. 2 Clemson vs. No. 3 Michigan in the Fiesta Bowl. The winners of those two semifinal matchups would meet in Tampa on January 9 for the national championship.

Of course, we all know that these rankings will very likely change over the next several weeks. But, it’s always fun to debate about college football, especially on an emotion-filled Election Night.
